Chicken Egg Hatching
Chickens are domestic birds that can be found on farms or even in backyards. They are farmed for their meat, eggs, and feathers. There are many different kinds of chickens, many are colorful. A group of chickens is called a flock. The female is a hen, the male is a rooster, and the babies are called chicks. Bantams are miniature chicken breeds.
The rooster is larger in size than the hens of the same breed. They are also more colorful and loud! They are known for crowing throughout the morning time, but they can also crow over the course of the day. Roosters also have a much larger comb on their heads. Chickens eat a lot of different things, including: insects, seeds, worms, fruits, acorns, grains, slugs, ticks, snails, and anything else they can find. They have a gizzard that is filled with tiny stones to help grind up the food they eat. Many different animals prey on chickens, so they are often kept enclosed in coops at night. These predators include: wolves, raccoons, foxes, snakes, skunks, owls, bobcats, and more. Most of these predators attack at night. The eggs of chickens can vary in size from white to light brown to green and even blue. They hatch in 21 days and are kept under the hen for warmth as they develop. Baby chicks are not fed by their mothers, instead the hen just helps the chicks find food. They are able to eat and drink within a few hours after hatching. Chicks stay with their mothers for warmth and protection for a few weeks. |
